The tunnel started to be built in 1848 and was finsihed two years later. It was used until 1928 when a new tunnel was built close by. The old tunnel was forgotten and became overgrown with kudzu vines until 1992. Preservationists then lobbied to save the tunnel. It is now a park centerpiece, and a site known for ghostly activity. The tunnel has seen a ton of tragedy because it was once the prominent site for Civil War battles. People have described spirits of soldiers and random campfires and lantern light, along with the smell of rotting flesh and ghostly screams.
