The Bonaventure Cemetery dates all the way back to the mid-1800's when it was a private property. It was later on purchased by the city in 1907. It is the very spot where preservationist and naturalist John Muir spent several nights in 1867, writing his book "A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf,” in the chapter “Camping in the Tombs." The site is rumored to be the home to many ghostly spirits, including a pack of ghost dogs and the spirit of a little girl, Gracie Watkins. Gracie is buried at the cemetery and those who visit often pay their respects by placing flowers, money or trinkets in the hands of her life-size statue. It has been said the statue cries tears of blood if any of her gifts are removed from her hands.
