Augusta State University
Augusta, GA 30904
Rumor has it that there are many ghosts haunting this state university, including the spirit of Emily Galt. Emily was a woman who over 140 years ago, opted to join her recently deceased soldier fiance by jumping to her death from a window of Bellevue Hall. Emily and her younger sister, Lucy, had etched their names and the date, 1861, into one of the hall's windows. The engraving was rumored to be done with Emily's engagement ring. People have heard of remaining hauntings of a man and woman arguing, presumably Emily and her fiance discussing whether he should go to war. TV's and phones here seem to have a mind of their own, and the doors open and close by themselves. The school's admission office, Benet House, is also rumored to be haunted, by a gray flash, footsteps and a rocking chair that rocks back and forth by itself. At Walker Cemtetery, the spirit of a Confederate soldier in a long gray coat and yellow sash has been known to walk among the graves. The campus was once occupied by a military arsenal and Civil War-era homes.
