Wright Square - The Hanging of Alice Riley
Savannah, GA 31401
This location is a popular one for ghost tours and is where the hanging of Alice Riley took place. Riley was an Irish immigrant who allegedly was the first woman to be executed in Georgia. She was the indentured servant to a cruel man, who she later on ended up drowning in his bath water after being raped and beaten by him repeatedly. Alice was pregnant and was allowed to live for 8 months in jail until her child was born. She then was promptly hung from the gallows. Locals say Alice's ghost sometimes can be seen in Wright Square, dressed in rags and looking for her baby - unaware that the baby died shortly after it was born.
